Comcasts Out Of Date Support

Last Thursday morning I ran a LiveUpdate of my Norton software (AntiVirus, etc.). After the update was complete I shut down my machine and didn’t start it up again until that night. When I finally did start it up I could not send or receive email. Not thinking that the Norton upgrade would be the problem I contacted a support rep at my ISP, Comcast, via an online chat. The support tech I got, Heather, suggested that one of my email index files was corrupted and gave me a link that discusses that. Another possibility she gave me was that Norton’s email scanning may have been causing the problem.

So I turned off Norton’s email scanning feature to see if that was it but to no availe. I could still not send or receive email. Next I went to the link Heather gave me about the index file. Though the page was not dated it was frightfully obvious that it was outdated. To fix the index file issue it suggested I upgrade to Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1. That would have been good advice except that IE6 SP2 was released in 2002 and I’ve been using it since not long after the release.

Afterwards I went back to the Norton angle and reset it’s firewall settings and all went back to normal. But you’ve got to wonder why Comcast was making a 4 year old suggestion to me. Why aren’t they training their techs with more current information? I don’t expect them to be perfect but I at least expect them to be current.
