Getting Hit On While Picking Up Takeout

One night last week we ordered Chinese food for dinner. We called in the order and then I went down to the basement to ride on my exercise bike. After I was done on the bike I showered and went out to pick up the food.

The cashier was a young woman wearing tight sweatpants and a shirt that was probably a size or two too small. This outfit accentuated every curve of her body and obviously drew the eye to certain parts. After an initial glance (because nobody could resist at least a quick look) I looked away and only looked at her when I needed to communicate with her. After all I’m a married man and I just wanted to get my food and go home.

But while she was ringing up my order and charging my credit card I noticed that she was staring at me. I exchanged a couple of glances and smiled politely but felt really uncomfortable. If I were single and ten (maybe 20) years younger I may have been more comfortable. But this girl was probably in high school and I’m well beyond that age (and did I mention that I’m married).

Finally she said “You smell nice”. I’d never gotten that before but I was fresh out of the shower so I couldn’t smell bad.

I politely replied “Thanks” and continued to avoid conversing with her.

She then said “No, I mean you really smell good”.

“I just got out of the shower,” I said, again trying to be polite but not looking for any real conversation.

“What do you use?” she continued.

“Soap.”

“That’s it? Really? Nothing else?”

At this point I was signing the credit card receipt and my food was already on the counter so I threw her a bone. “Old Spice body wash,” I said.

“Oh that must be it”.

“Yes,” I said, “Must be.” I then grabbed my food, said thanks and got out of there.

This wasn’t the first time I had been hit on since I’ve been married but for some reason it made me very uncomfortable. Could it be the age difference? Could it be that I was worried about what other people in the store would think (since the store is only a few blocks from home and I know some of the other patrons that were there)? Could it be that I just found it unprofessional for the cashier to hit on a customer?

I don’t know but I just had to share.
