Secunia Software Inspector

It’s interesting how Windows users are always so concerned about having the latest updates for their operating system installed but don’t take the time to be sure their other software is up to date. I was recently turned on to the Secunia Software Inspector that checks for updates of installed software as well as Windows so Windows users can be a bit more secure in knowing their applications are as up to date as their operating system.

It’s a Java application and as such Java will prompt you if you want to run the app. After clicking Run you’re returned to the web page. Clicking Start from there will kick off the process. There is a ‘thorough’ mode that enables it to check for apps in non-standard locations. This mode obviously lengthens the amount of time it takes for the scan to run. As it’s running the inspector will begin to show you a list of the software you have installed along with some information on any updates that may be needed including links to the download the updates. Pretty neat.
