Using PQAs on a non Palm VII

Equipment I Used
Palm: Palm IIIc running PalmOS 3.5.2

Before You Begin
In order to use PQAs you’ll need either a Palm modem, wireless modem for the Palm or a cell phone that can be used as a wireless modem so that you can access the internet.  (You can find instruction for how to set up your Palm to use a cellphone as a wireless modem here.)

You’ll also need Palm OS 3.3 or later running on your Palm.  To check what Palm OS you’re running use the following steps:

  1. With your Palm powered on Tap the Menu button in the bottom left corner.

  2. Tap Info… in the App menu.

  3. Tap the Version choice at the bottom of the screen.

If the first line of your screen says Palm OS® Software v. 3.3.0, Palm OS® Software v. 3.5.0 or Palm OS® Software v. 3.5.2 then your OS is capable of being upgraded to PQA functionality.

Installing The Web Clipping Libraries
The first step in using PQAs on your Palm is to install the web clipping libraries.  You can download a zip file containing the libraries for Palm OS 3.5 here.  The zip file includes the following 5 files:

Clipper 3.2

iNetLib 3.2
Weblibrary 3.2
Securitylibrary 3.2
Wireless 1.0

The Web Clipping libraries for Palm OS 4.1 can be downloaded here.  The zip file includes the following 4 files:

Clipper 4.0
WCALoader 1.0
Web Clipping 4.0
Web Intro 1.3

After installing these files do a soft reset.

Now all you need to do is install some PQAs, start your internet connection and start PQA-ing.  For a full menu of PQAs go to Palm.net.

Resetting The Proxy (Not Necessary for OS 4.1)
Palm maintains several proxies servers through which you can access PQA functionality.  By default your Palm is set to use the production Palm.net proxy.  However, they maintain two proxies for developers use.  Should you need to change your proxy (if you are a developer or if Palm changes the production server) the functionality of the Wireless applet gives you an easy way to do so.

  1. Go to Prefs applet on the Palm. Tap the menu on the top right corner and choose the Wireless option.  (This option was added when you installed the wireless.prc file included in the zip file above.)

  2. After the Wireless option is selected your screen should look like this:
  3. Tap the proxy setting displayed.  Your screen should now look like this:

  4. You can now edit the proxy setting as you would edit any text on your Palm.  When your done editing just tap the OK button and your new proxy settings will be saved.

To change your proxy settings back to the default proxy simply follow steps 1-3, tap the Default button and tap the OK button.  Your proxy will now be set back to the default.
