It's hard to believe, but for the first three seasons nobody really knew that Seinfeld was about, well, you know. It wasn't until season 4--unleashed here in a four-disc set that's equal in scope, quality, and quantity of bonus material to its predecessors--that the show really became something. In a series which can claim every installment as classic, the two-parter on disc 1 titled "The Pitch/The Ticket" truly stands out as a defining episode and, in retrospect, marked Seinfeld 4 as the breakthrough season. It's the one where (fake) NBC executives express their interest in working with Jerry Seinfeld on a TV show, then moves to the who's-on-first shtick of George successfully pitching Jerry on creating "a show about nothing." Scattered throughout the discs in commentaries by cast and creators and in numerous "Inside Look" documentaries, nearly everyone expresses some anxiety about the season having a story "arc" depicting Jerry and his "real" life becoming a sitcom. The show had been only marginally successful up to that point anyway, and with the edict, "no hugging, no learning," still in place, maybe messing with nothing was a bad idea. What makes the arc so arch is the self-reflexive way it details the reality of Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David coming up with the concept and pitching it to (real) NBC executives as a show that really was about, well, you know. In one of the many informally informative interview segments, Jerry remembers hitting a stride during this time when a lot of crazy ideas started to make sense. "Everything was just a wild guess," he says, "and it takes a while to get confident that you're guessing pretty good. I think sometime in season 4 we realized we were guessing pretty good." Oh, that we could all be so good at nothing.
Season 4 also gave us the episodes "The Bubble Boy" ("He lives in a bubble!"), "The Pick" ("There was no pick!"), and, perhaps most memorably, "The Contest." Recalling how nervous he thought NBC might be about a show based on how long a person can remain--ahem--master of his domain, Larry David says that he kept the idea hidden for a long time. He may have had NBC sweating, but the episode goes by without anyone uttering the word that it's really about. The curmudgeonly David also observes that another famous season 4 episode, "The Outing," only made it on the air due to a network "note" about making sure it wouldn't be offensive to homosexuals. Hence we have the addition of another standard to the Seinfeld lexicon of American pop culture: "Not that there's anything wrong with that!" Not only wasn't there anything wrong with it, the episode won a GLAAD Media Award. Season 4 also brought Seinfeldits first Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series. Stay tuned for season 5 (and a move to the coveted Thursday-at-9 slot) when the volcano we now know was always brewing really blew its comedic top. --Ted Fry

There were some good reasons for that. I was working 50 hours a week in those days - sometimes more; I played softball in a couple of night leagues and was on a bowling team. When softball season ended I played in a YMCA basketball league and did some volunteer work with a nonprofit organization raising money for under-financed hospitals in Honduras.
The point is, I was seldom home when the show was being broadcast and, as a result, I never saw it.
That changed because of YouTube.
Now that I'm retired and writing mystery novels to fill in my days and nights, I sometimes tune into YouTube since I don't own a television.
(I know, sounds un-American but it's the truth.)
I like YouTube because I can watch interesting documentaries, catch a little political ranting and raving, and watch clips of comedians.
It was while surfing YouTube looking for some comedy that I discovered "Seinfeld" for the first time: It was a short clip set in Jerry's apartment in which the immortal line "They're real, and they're spectacular" was uttered by Terri Hatcher.
Oh my...
Intrigued, I did a little research and watched a few interviews about the show to get a sense of it. In one of those interviews Julia Louis-Dreyfus noted that this was the show's breakout season and so I ordered it.
It's hilarious and, frankly, I wish now that I had found the time to watch it back in the day.
The ensemble cast blends together perfectly and the guest stars all bring something interesting and unique to their performances.
Most of all, however, I love the writing.
As a former journalist turned author, I have lived most of my life turning words into sentences, sentences into paragraphs, and paragraphs into stories. It's all I've ever wanted to do and because that's true I am always searching for writers who can catch my attention and hold it. Usually, I find those writers in the pages of books but every now and then I run across people who can do that in movies and on television.
If this season is any indication of their talent, the men and women who wrote "Seinfeld" are certainly among the best I've seen.
This season has been reviewed hundreds - maybe even thousands - of times so I'm not going to delve deeply into its episodes. Suffice it to say that there are no clunkers in this set. I also enjoyed the "behind-the-scenes" interviews and notes.
In short, one of the best purchases I've made in a long time.
This year contains many of the show's greatest moments. The Contest is a landmark in the show's history, in which Jerry, Elaine, Kramer, and George try to go without self-gratification. The Implant is also notable, with Jerry musing whether or not his girlfriends' breasts are real. I also get a kick out of Kramer's story in the episode, where he becomes convinced that Salman Rushdie is a member of his health club. The Junior Mint is also iconic, where Jerry can't remember a woman's name (the episode's infamous final joke left many people confused afterward). But my favorite would have to be The Outing, where Jerry and George are "outed" and thus spawned the line "not that there's anything wrong with that." Amid all of this was George and Jerry's attempts to produce a pilot for NBC, which, of course, was not picked up. It did, though, allow Heidi Swedberg to become a semi-regular member of the cast as Susan, George's on-again, off-again girlfriend (and later fiancee). She provided an excellent foil for Jason Alexander, who really comes into his own in this season, the last twinges of the Woody Allen-like anxiety replaced with Larry David-like paranoia and self-loathing. I wouldn't have it any other way.
I am especially looking forward to this DVD release: the previous two DVD sets were excellent both in terms of picture quality and extras. If only other DVD-makers would follow this standard--the last Frasier installment was devoid of special features of any kind. You don't need me to tell you how great the show is--you already know. So buy this set. Now.
This season is dominated by memorable "Seinfeld" moments, and in fact contains several of my all time favorite episodes, including "The Bubble Boy" (the "Moops" exchange is one of my very favorite moments ever captured on film; I especially love the look on Susan's face when George punctures the bubble); "The Cheever Letters" (one of the more surreal plots with perhaps the best surprise of the series, once again delivered by Susan); the classic episode, "The Contest" (I particularly love the matched shots of the contrast between angst and peaceful sleep); "The Junior Mint" (which is one of the most visually and conceptually amusing of all Seinfeld episodes); and last but not least, "The Smelly Car," which I find to be one of the best written of all the "Seinfeld" episodes ("It's beyond BO...It's BBO!").
The extras are great and include numerous commentary tracks, the amusing and informative "Notes About Nothing" features, extra scenes, outtakes, and more.
This is the best possible use of your entertainment dollar. I couldn't recommend this set more highly.
