Song of the Day: Jeremy by Pearl Jam
Today’s song of the day is Jeremy by Pearl Jam. I heard this song while stuck in traffic on the way to work this morning.
If you don’t know the song it’s about a boy who commits suicide by shooting himself in front of his high school class. As I grow older it hits me in different ways. I first heard it against the backdrop of several school violence cases, not the least of which was Columbine. But as I have grown older and became a father it’s taken on a whole new meaning for me with regard to the role that Jeremy’s parents played in the story. The following lines are the ones that get me:
Daddy didn’t give attention
Oh, to the fact that mommy didn’t care
Daddy didn’t give affection, no…
And the boy was something that mommy wouldn’t wear
There’s no substitute for the love of a parent. Spend time with your kids. Play with them, teach them, love them. Don’t let your child suffer the tragedy that is Jeremy.
