Hulu

I finally got in on the Hulu beta. Hulu is the new site that will carry licensed video content from NBC, FOX, MGM and others. Miss an episode of your favorite show on NBC? You’l be able to watch it on Hulu. I’ve only watched a few video clips and one episode of Heroes so far but it looks nice. The advertising is not very intrusive. When you watch an episode you get a quick word from the sponsor at the start and then one 15 second video ad at the commercial breaks. The only issue I had was that when I was watching in full screen the ad would sometimes freeze. I’d have to go out of full screen mode and wait a few seconds for the video to pick up where it left off. Considering this is still in beta that’s not a big deal. Overall the user experience has been good so far. I’m going to play with it a little more over the next few weeks to see some of the other features. For now, enjoy this embedded episode of Heroes.

Strip For Spam

Spammers are apparently using a trojan embedded in an animated stripper program to collect information that could help them register more mail accounts to send their spam. According to a report in PC World the program presents users with CAPTCHAs taken from Yahoo Mail’s signup page. When the user solves the CAPTCHA correctly the stripper, names Melissa, reveals more of her body. The answers are likely stored on a server somewhere for later use. I guess they’re figuring that if they have enough of these in the database they would eventually be able to solve them relatively easily. The idea would be that when they get a CAPTCHA from Yahoo they could compare the image to the ones in their database. When they find a match they could enter the answer that a Melissa user gave them and they’re good to go.

U.S. Senate OKs 7 Year Internet Tax Ban

Reuters is reporting that the U.S. Senate has approved legislation extending a moratorium on state Internet access taxes for seven years. This follows a House vote to extend the tax moratorium by 4 years. The two will now have to work out a joint bill. This is good news for internet users around the whole country.
