2006-2007 NHL Schedules for the Palm

I am happy to announce the return of the hockey schedule product line. I have not done schedules for the NHL over the last 2 years due to the lockout (2 seasons ago) and bad timing (I was busy at my real job last year and couldn’t find the time to get them done). But now the The 2006-2007 National Hockey League (NFL) Schedules for the Palm are now available for purchase. The price has been rolled back to $1.00 (it used to be $1.25). For more information follow this link.

For those interested in vCal (.vcs) versions (for Outlook and other PIMs as well as for Mac) the process for acquiring these versions is the same as in the past. Purchase the version that is available on the page above. After your transaction has been completed forward me the receipt you get from Handango along with a request for the vCal (.vcs) version of the product you purchased. Upon receiving the request I will generate the file and email it to you as soon as I can.

WordPress Database Error

I’m experiencing an interesting problem on one of my other blogs. The software I use for all my blogs is Wordprsss. I like it’s ease of install and plugin finctionality. It’s also very easy to manage. But when I logged in to check on comments on the other blog I got the following error:

WordPress database error: [Can’t open file: ‘wp_comments.MYI’ (errno: 144)]
SELECT COUNT(*) FROM wp_comments WHERE comment_approved = ‘0’

WordPress database error: [Can’t open file: ‘wp_comments.MYI’ (errno: 144)]
SELECT COUNT(comment_ID) FROM wp_comments WHERE comment_approved = ‘spam’

I did some digging around on this issue and learned from someones bad experience that there is a quick and easy way to resolve the issue.

My provider uses cPanel for allowing it’s users control of their domains. If you go into the “MySQL® Databases” section of cPanel you’ll see a list of any databases you have created along with some options and the connection strings your Perl and PHP scripts need to use to connect to the databases. You can ignore most of it. All you need is the name of the database for the blog that is giving you this error. If you don’t know it you can get it out of the wp-config.php file in your WordPress install directory. (Hint: You’re looking for what is said right after you see ‘DB_NAME’.) Look in cPanel for the database you’re having the problem with and then click the link labeled “Repair”. Now wait. Your browser will work for a while. Do not close it or go to another page. Just leave it alone and let it work. When it’s done you should be ok. Do whatever it was that lead you to discover the error and you should see that the error no longer occurs.

Magic Numbers

You may have noticed the Athletics magic number message on the sidebar lately and wondered what that was all about. The Athletics (better known as the A’s) are a professional baseball that plays it’s home games in Oakland, California. The magic number (at 6 as I write this) is the number of games they need to win or the number of games the second place team needs to lose or any combination of the two in order for them to win their division and clinch a playoff berth.

You may be wondering why such information is on a blog like this. After all this blog has nothing to do with baseball. And besides, I’m a Mets fan.

I have another blog that is baseball related and every spring I go around looking for different baseball related WordPress plugins to try to jazz up that blog. And every year the search yields nothing. This year I resolved that I would write my own baseball related plugin. It came a little late but this magic number is the beginning of that plugin. I put it up on my baseball blog but put it here too for testing purposes. (The one on my baseball blog is set to display the Mets magic number.) It works by downloading an XML feed of the baseball standings and parsing & displaying data for a team that the blogger chooses from the Admin section of their WordPress based blog. if the team is in first place it will display their magic number. If the team is not in first place (and hence has no magic number) it will display how many games behind first place they are. And if they are in first place but already clinched (which also means they will no longer have a magic number) it will display a message saying that they have won their division.

The plan for this plugin is to make it a more in depth report based on the standings. It will have home/away records, divional records, etc. in a table suitable for display on the top of the blog or in it’s sidebar. I also plan on making a version for NFL football and NBA basketball. I have already begun working on the NFL version and hope it’s ready in the next few weeks.

What To Do About Yahoo

Due to the overwhelming number of requests I have gotten for the Yahoo security email address I am sorry to say that I will no longer be sending it out to people. Between blog comments and emails requesting it I have gotten far too many requests to be able to comply.

The reason why I published my story was not to become a clearinghouse for an email address that may or may not be the one you need. I wanted to tell my story so that:

As I say in the original post on how I got my account back the security email address was given to me after explaining my situation to someone on the phone. Instead of asking me for the email address you should be calling the telephone number I gave. For all any of us know the email address I got may have changed since then, been repurposed for a different use or may not even be the one you need to get what you need.

So go back and re-read my original post, find the phone number (I’ll give you a hint, it’s at the end of the fifth paragraph), call it and calmly & patiently explain your situation to the first human you get on the phone. That person will be far more qualified to properly direct you on your next step than I am.
