Restoring Columns After Installing TweetDeck
TweetDeck is one of the many Twitter clients available that runs on the Adobe AIR engine. Though the website says it’s in beta is is one of the most widely used Twitter clients.
Many people, myself included encountered a major issue when installing the latest version, 0.26.4. After installing this version TweetDeck would no longer load my columns. It also would not allow me to access the Settings dialog. It was essentially unable to do anything.
After searching the web I found that many people were having the same problem but there were no known solutions. That has now changed since I have found a solution.
With the idea that there must be some old, possibly corrupted files on my machine from the previous install I uninstalled TweetDeck and did some searching around my hard drive. As luck would have it I found a couple of directories that seemed strange. I deleted them, reinstalled TweetDeck and everything worked fine. Here are the steps for executing this fix:
- Uninstall TweetDeck.
- Search your hard drive for directory names that include “TweetDeckFast” (without the quotes). On my Windows machine I found 2 of them:
- C:\Documents and Settings\XXXXXX\Application Data\TweetDeckFast.F9107117265DB7542C1A806C8DB837742CE14C21.1
- C:\Documents and Settings\XXXXXX\Application Data\Adobe\AIR\ELS\TweetDeckFast.F9107117265DB7542C1A806C8DB837742CE14C21.1
(XXXXXX=My user profile directory.)
- Delete these directories.
- Reinstall TweetDeck.
TweetDeck should now work. You will probably need to reconfigure your columns and groups (or load them from your TweetDeck Sync account, if you have one). You may even need to re-enter your twitter account information. (I’d be appreciative if anyone reading this can confirm this point.) But you will now have a fully functional installation of TweetDeck.
