RIP Eartha Kitt
I heard last night that Eartha Kitt died of colon cancer yesterday at the age of 81. As most guys my age my first exposure to Kitt was as Catwoman on the old Adam West ‘Batman’ TV show. She was filling the role after Lee Meriwether and Julie Newmar had their turns. Much later, in 2003, my wife and I had the pleasure of seeing her perform on Broadway as Liliane in ‘Nine’. She was wonderful and actually brought up the performances of her co-stars (most notably John Stamos, who had the lead role of Guido). Even at the age of 76 she was able to heat up the stage. In between I’d seen her on TV on many occasions and actually had to explain to my wife who she was when she appeared on an episode of ‘The Nanny’ when the Sheffields went to Paris. Earlier in her career she recorded the holiday standard “Santa Baby” and was dubbed “the most exciting woman in the world” by Orson Welles.
Rest in peace.
