Mac Password Hacking
I had an interesting task at work last week. I had to prepare a Mac for some testing. Doesn’t sound like much but the Mac had been used by a former employee and nobody knew the password he had used on it. I tried various possibilities based on my knowledge of him, his family, his work and his interests. None of them worked. This called for a more subversive approach.
I did some searching on Google and found a page that discusses how to hack passwords on a Mac. Various methods suggested on several pages of comments to that page had failed. Figuring I had nothing to lose I decided to try mixing the methods I had found until I found one that worked. I figured if I hosed the machine at this point it wouldn’t be a big deal. The machine was useless to me in it’s current state anyway so I would have had no qualms about clearing the hard drive and starting from scratch. The only reason I was still going at it was for the challenge. So off I went.
After only about 2 or 3 tries I came across the following method that worked for me:
- Click Restart at the login window
- While the computer is restarting, hold down “Command-S” until you see text scrolling through the window. This boots the computer into single user mode.
- At the Localhost% prompt type:
/sbin/fsck –y
/sbin/mount –uw /
sh /etc/rc4. When the Localhost% prompt reappears, type:
passwd [username]
(Replace [username] with the username you wan to change and leave out the brackets.)
You will then be prompted to type a new password for this user 2 times.
5. After entering the new password, type:
reboot
6. At the login window, enter the username with the new password.
Voila!

As far as I know you can’t recover the old one. But since you don’t remember that one anyway it doesn’t really make much of a difference. Whether you’re being reminded of an old password you forgot or making a new one it would still be something you’d have to remember that you didn’t remember before.
Does this, for lack of a better term, hurt the computer in anyway. I mean does it wipe the memory or change anything from what it was before?
Speaking only from my experience this does not have any ill affects on the computer. All the data is still there.
ive tried this on my power book and it dont work. if i type in sh /etc/rc it says unbound variable. is there another way to do this?
Read through the comments at the link I referenced in my post. They give many different variations on this method and odds are you’ll find one that will work for you.
what if you put a password on an account of yours and forgot it but you want to keep everything on the account can i still use this method?
in the directions you have:
/sbin/fsck –y
/sbin/mount –uw /
sh /etc/rc
what are we supposed to do at the line breaks such as press enter?
When exacly do i press command-s.when the loadin bar is loadin or on the screen befor that cuz it aint worken.and does it make a diffrence if i have the cap lock on or not
From the very beginning. If holding it down doesn’t work then try holding down command and tapping the S key.
ahh please help me! this is not working at all for me! someone needs to give me step by step EXACTlY everything that needs to be typed!
The method I described worked for me. I wrote the post exactly as it needed to be typed for me. As I said in the post I needed to do some experimentation (by mixing methods I found at other sites) until I found the combination of commands that worked for me. This exact method may or may not work for you. If it didn’t work for you then I suggest you follow the link I gave in the post and/or do Google searches to find a method that may work for you.
what sort of Mac were you doing this on? Which version of OS? Do you think the procedure varies by these two variables, or is that because of something else?
This was a G3 Mac with one of the OS X versions on it (I don’t remember which one). I do not know what causes the procedure to vary.
Please, come on now, all you need is nothing: OK, restart your computer, hold down Command-S and type in the following:
/sbin/fsck -y [Enter]
/sbin/mount -uaw [Enter]
rm /var/db/.applesetupdone [Enter]
reboot [Enter]
Once you’ve done that the computer reboots and ask you to set up an admin password. From there you just change all other account passwords in the account preferences!!
hehehe this is done guys ????
Does this way of hacking the computer damage it in any way, like erasing files or crashing? Also, once your logged on can you just switch the password to any other password the normal way? One last thing, does this work for any mac or does it need to be a laptop/desktop or a certain version?? Just curious Thank You.
All those questions have been answered to the best of my knowledge in the original post and the comments above. Please read through them and if you have any questions after that feel free to ask more.

Hi!
I cant type anything when I come as far as when they ask me to type in the new Password.
None of the buttons work…only enter, and i cant leave it blank offcorse.
Did anyone have the same problem and did you come up with a soulution.
Thanks
Gustav
when you say
/sbin/fsck –y
/sbin/mount –uw /
sh /etc/rc
are there any spaces between ( -y and the start of /sbin/mount -uw / ) ?????????????????
i have tried many a time with using space without and i get nothing. is it because i am doing it on a school comp.
The data on the machine will be fine. But you will be resetting the admin password on the machine. I don’t know what your motivation is here but the school has admins for these machines. You should let them handle admin level issues.
Hey you guys!!! try the method of the indian guy posted on this comments. It will let you create your own administrator account!!! This means that for now on you can change everything on the computer including the passwords of the other accounts that were before.
I seriously recommend it!!
Only one thing, I don’t know if it would happen to everyone but in my case after filling all the blanks with my info I got to a part where it asks if I wanted to try for free the .Mac account and after clicking continue nothing happened. Do not scare, just quit the application with command+Q and it will send you to the desktop.
ok i hold down “apple+s” at the main screen; that works fine. but when i try to type in
“/sbin/fsck –y
/sbin/mount –uw /
sh /etc/rc”
it tells me “illegal option”
what do i do??
Does anyone know how to reformat the drive without using the installer cd’s or delete everything off the harddrive except for the operating system?
I have a MacBook Pro with leopard and it wont seem to work. Is there anything specific with leopard?
after i put sh /etc/rc it gives me a error ..
what should i do
and if i continue typing passwd [username]
it doesn’t do anything
I press command-s at start up and it takes me to a screen that says
“Welcome to yaboot version 1.3. 13
enter “help to get some basic usage information
boot: ”
and I cant do ant thing after that
Hello guys. I tried this several times and it didn’t work. I then took out the sh /etc/rc and just entered passwd [username] and it worked. Hopefully this will help some of you guys.
Hi, I have a MacBook Pro running 10.4.10. I’ve been trying various combinations of commands in order to try to reset the password, but when I run /etc/rc, some commands run but then I get a blue screen with the mouse cursor, but it doesn’t seem to go any further. I thought /etc/rc didn’t start the GUI but it seems like it’s trying. Any ideas?!

Some help plz. i had bought the laptop on ebay. i old owner has her info on the admin. i have tried to change the info but it is asking me for her password. rite now the laptop works fine but i am affraid that if try this method and if it does nt work then would i be stuck on the login window or it will work but still with old admin info
Big thanks for this post!
I used a variation found on the link you included which worked.
The weirdest thing brought me to need this hack. I reinstalled the OS keeping user accounts and network prefs intact. On initial startup after reinstall, all three user passwords wouldn’t work!!! Very frustrating. I think I’ll try the reinstallation that nukes the old user accounts which I have backed up anyway..
Thanks again. cheers
does this really work..
cos mums brought new apple mac that no one knows the password too and shes fallen out with the woman who sold it to us -.-;
and im worried i might bugger it up
plus im a new user and im not sure about where the command and s keys are sorry =’[
thanks =]

It’s hit or miss. It works on some Macs but not on others. Some work with a variation of the steps in the post. You have nothing to lose by trying it since it will not harm the Mac in any way. If my steps don’t work then look through the comments and you’ll find some variations that may work for you.

i tried all these methods and nothing at all works. it gives me zero results. my version is a mac os x 10.3.3. i dont need the password to get on, but i need it to install updates, im not sure if that is the problem. when i turn on it goes directly into an account, so i dont actually need the password to logon
Peter -
Let me see if I understand your situation. You turn on your Mac and are automatically logged into an account. When you run an update you are asked for a username and password. You don’t know the password because you never use it. Is this correct? If so then just change the password on the account you are using. If that account has admin rights you should be good to go. Give it a shot and please comment on your results here so we can learn from your experience.

Keeping it alive in 2008…
Had this problem with an old G4 Powerbook. None of the instructions in the post would work. Read the comments and tried the Indian Guy’s instructions and it worked! I am now the admin of a old G4 Powerbook! Thank you Akash Gupta(indian guy)!!!
Thanks Dave for the post and getting the ball rolling. That having been said, Akash Gupta(indian guy), your post bailed me out wonderfully. Thanks to both of you.
thank you sooo much my dad bought me this computer and i couldnt use my ipod on it or anyting cause i needed a software update but i needed an admin password and the guy who sold it sed it was 1234 but it wasnt n it was basicly useless for me cause all i do is watch movies listen to music n use the internet so i needed the admin password in order to do anything even download 7.4 itunes and i googled this before but no help but this time it took me to this page thanks alot i can finally use my comp now
I’m on a family admin account, and i’m trying to change the password for my account that you can switch to, but i forgot the password does this thing work?
Everything worked for me except when it asks for the new password it freezes and I have to start to all over it again just for it to do the same thing. Any suggestions?
hey guys i did the indian guys thing but then it restarted my computer and everything was lost!!!! EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!!!it asked me for the language and junk and now………….just someone pleaaaaaaaaase help!!!
hey! why did it restart my whole computer!? everything is gone!!!!!!!!lost!!!!everything!!! help!!!!
Hey I finally figured out how to reset my password on leopard after a couple hours of fooling around with all the different advice from this post. It really saved me. thank you to all. This is the combo I came up with that worked:
/sbin/fsck -y [enter]
/sbin/mount -uaw [enter]
passwd [usernamem] (put the administrators username, no the word username and take off the brackets)
type in a new password at prompt the two times it asks
type reboot
I had lost my administrator password. I had trouble with Dave’s first suggestion though it got me close. I tried Akash’s deal and I too thought it wiped everything out (although I didn’t care much cause I was pretty much resigned to having lost it all anyway) cause it restarted the computer and acted like it was a brand new mac. I realized, after that all it did was create a new user and the adminsitrator was still there and I hadn’t lost any data but of course I still didn’t have the password. What Akash’s data taught me, however, was that it wasn’t “-uw” it was “-uaw”.
is there a way of finding out wat the current pass word is WITHOUT changin the username and password?
@shadowangel: For 10.2 Panther it is quite easy, after moving up to Tiger and Leopard it is no longer possible. Passwords at this stage are hashed with SHA1, and it would take months for even, say, a computer with 4 gb ram and Intel Core 2 Extreme to hack the hash with brute force. Needless to say, it may even be impossible.
@Gupta the Indian guy: Users running 10.4+ may experience problems with this, the resulting admin account sometimes can not function at all.
You’re best bet is to use these commands:
/sbin/mount -uaw [Enter]
sh /etc/rc [Enter] (Note: I have no idea why but on some machines a blue screen of death, or bsod, appears. I am trying to figure out why, too.)
password [Enter] (Fill it in with your username.)
Two password prompts will appear. Sometimes the password will not show, but it is working. Enter in your new password once, press enter, then input again.
reboot [Enter]
Well hope that helped, email me at ricktakei@gmail.com if you need more help.
it still ends up the same.you still need to know the old password to get the new one. I need to know how to hack the computer without having to write the old password down. And do u know how to make a new password without needing to know the old one?
christine -
The steps in my original post allowed me to change the password without knowing the old one. If it doesn’t work for you then try one of the other suggestions from the comments. I’m pretty sure you will find what you need.

I read through the posts and thought I had the problem knocked – I bought a used G4 running Tiger with Sawtooth (I think) on eBay, but the seller neglected to give me the UN and PW. I tried what Akash suggested, and got through the setup process, but when the machine started to boot after I finished the setup, the screen went blue, my monitor made a ‘bink’ sound and there was a squiggly white flash on the screen, and then the screen went black – nothing. Please help! I need to get this machine working so I can do my taxes! TurboTax won’t run on a Mac that runs 10.3!
Thanks for this great peace of advice if you don’t have any installerdisc for your Mac. If someone has questions about installer discs from Apple; I collect these and investigated on what Macs most of the discsets will install. So don’t hesitate to ask me if you have a non-working set or you lost or damaged yours. I can check it out for You. Also for advise about which set to buy from Auctionsites for your own Mac. With these disks you can easily reset your Administrator Password assuming that you can startup your Mac from these DVD’s.
Greetings; macfan55 g m a i l dot c o m
I’m not at my Mac right now so I can’t double check. I’d say try it both ways and see if it works either way.
hey I just want to be 100% sure that this will not erase any previous information/data from the old account right?? I completely forgot my password and my account but i really don’t want to loose all my documents and songs and stuff. That won’t happen will it??
Shanna -
It shouldn’t. In the two times that I have done it my data was safe. All other sources have said that their data was safe as well.
- Dave
thank you dave! but now i type in passwd (my username) and it doesn’t ask me for a password? Am i doing it wrong?
This didn’t work for me. I typed in my new password and it seem to recognize the new password but it told me that it could not log in at this time. Can someone please help me. I really need to get work done
Vanessa -
I don’t think the hardware matters. You have nothing to lose by trying it and seeing if it works for you.
- Dave
It work for me ..but only up to the part that said new password once it got there it wouldnt let me type a new password.
Thank you so much this is a great way to hack and iI and i would I would recommend it to anyone!!

Guys, the first mac, Idid this before reading this page , it worked very simply. Thenon myothermac, i tried the same thing butit didn’twork. You need to try many different ways because many macs are different
Hi Guys HELP I’m in South America with no close Apple service center. I have an old Imac G5 with Mac OSX Leopard installed.I decided to upgrade the memory and then do a complete new back up with my Time Capsule.
What happened was somehow it changed my administrator’s name or password, also on my users account in System Preferences I only am showing now two accounts both with my name and both as a standard account, no administrators account. So I can’t do anything because each time I try to chance something it asks for the administrators name and password. I have tried everything I know but can’t get access as I always get the same, name or password incorrect.
Checking all the Apple help sites they all say the same, to change the administrators name of password,
insert the start up disk and restart pressing the C button then go to utilities and change the password. I did manage to do this once, but for what ever reason it didn’t work and since then I can’t get it to restart on C
Also I can’t get it to restart from the install DVD because that asks me for my administrators name and password.
I also have read through all your posts and tried to restart using command and C but it just takes me to my main page. I’m way past the stage of throwing it out the window, so any help would be really appreciated. I also use a G4 powerbook, but don’t know if I could use this in any way. Thanks Robert
Was told to try this, but it didn’t work for me
but may help someone else. ( this came direct from Apple )
What I would try to do..
Restart the machine and hold down the shift Key.. (Be patient it will take at least 5 Mins to boot up and you need to hold the shift key all the time)
It will boot in SAFE MODE.
You will be asked for a user name and password.. or you will see an account called other.
Use the user name root
Password (your old administrator password)
If this fails to let you in reboot the machine and hold down the apple key and the S key.
The machine will boot into single user mode.. Look a bit like ms dos.. and there will be a command line you can type on.
In the command line type.
/sbin/mount uw / (hit return) this will only work if you have leopard installed.
then type passwd (hit return)
Enter a new password and hit return (you will not be able see the password as you type)
confirm the password by re-typing it.
Reboot again holding down the shift key.
Once again enter the user name root and password (your new password)
Once you are login in as root go to system preference and choose only account. In here there is an option (check box) to make it and admin account and to reset it password..
I sent my laptop in for repairs and pulled out my old G4 Laptop. Its been so long, I remember the password BUT NOT The login name. How would i get to to a list of users so I can get my Login name. ITS been so long that I cant find my old disks. Please Help,
Thx
Mike
It does exactly what I originally wrote: change the password of the account. No new accounts are created.
Hi! I was wondering if you could maybe help me with this.
I lost my admin password of my Powerbook G4, so I used:
mount -uw /
rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
shutdown -h now
to remove the old admin account so i could create a new one. This worked perfectly in just one try. But when i have to fill in my data (Apple ID, name, address, etc.) the keyboard is disabled! It just makes this annoying sound when i press any key. Without entering your data you obviously can’t continue registration.
The keys do work untill that introduction clip starts.
Help would be very much appreciated, since my laptop is useless this way.!
ok accedentally entered one wwrng key and the computer froze i restarted it it got black an dblue restarted it again and now its just blue and nothing else but with the mouse key in the top left corner frozen
Thanks for this. Got a 2007 imac with a dead DVD drive and a user name but no password and no discs. This got it running with a new log in, but previous owner’s stuff is still on it and locked. Is there any way to clear THAT unknown password so I can access the folders and then delete them?
I attempted to follow your steps and im sure I did it wrong because now my screen is completely offset. Is there something i can do to reset my screen so its back to normal again? ps i attempted to adjust the settings in the system preferences and still nothing…thnks-skaleton
Thanks, Dave! Slight variant: after wrong password attempts for non-admin accounts, buttons on login frame are grayed out (e.g. sleep, restart…). Keyboard & mouse work to enter text in username & password fields, but system otherwise unresponsive. Power button puts iMac to sleep, but it wakes frozen on login screen. Any ideas? (iMac PPC G5 2MHz OS 10.4.11)
please help, i have a used macbook that originally belonged to a school. I have the start up disc but no adminstrator’s password. I have tried all of the suggested methods to bypass but this laptop will not boot to single user mode. It repeatedly asks for adiministrator’s password even with the disc!!
I did what the Akash Gupta(indian guy) said to do and it cleared my hard drive. Who knows how to get it back????????
Worked for me!! Thank you Dave for posting this!
It worked on my iMac Intel Core 2 Duo with 10.4 installed.
i cant get the command-S to work it will work on my macbook but nit the one ive bout and dont no the password any ideas?
does this eliminate the previous user log in you had before, or does it just create a new user profile. separate from the one you had before? in other words, will this new username be the primary administrator?
Leon – This changes the password for the username designated in step 4. There is no new user being created here. The install DVD should not be needed.
Tre – Different variations work on different flavors of OSX.
dave can you help me with a 17′ imac school model everything i do on it or try to do asks for the administrator username & password how do i get thru with out it.

I tried all your options above and none worked. Is there a way for me to do this. I am trying to downgrade from Snow L to Leopard. Help out guys my email is that_guyv@yahoo.com

This worked for me…
I have a unibody Macbook Pro 15” 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo.
I decided to update iTunes two weeks ago.
It was then, when I was prompted to input my admin password, that I realized that I had forgotten it. The hint didn’t even ring a bell!
I looked it up on the net and immediately found that the “easy” solution was to use the Mac OS X boot disk. Great! Problem solved!
I inserted the disk.
My laptop spit it right back out.
I reinserted.
Spit right back out.
I played that game for hours.
The next day I called Apple to find out my warranty had expired A DAY EARLIER!
So the disk drive is a separate issue…
But I did figure out a way to “back-door” into my Mac.
To “Hack-a-Mac” and reset the admin password.
This method is posted to assist those who are the OWNERS of Macs and NEED to gain access to their OWN machines.
If you are a waste-of-flesh thief…Kharma IS a bitch…and she WILL catch up to you.
The following is what worked for ME on my machine.
I make no guarantees or promises that this will work for you.
All machines are as different as their individual users.
1) Reboot or restart your Macbook Pro
2) When you hear the boot-up “tone,” hold down “command “ and “s” keys simultaneously, until you see a black screen with text on it, when you see this, release the keys.
3) Wait for all of the codes to load.
4) Press the “return” key once to make sure you have a fresh root prompt.
5) Enter the following: /sbin/mount(space)-uw (space)/
**Do not type the (space)…this is where you will tap the spacebar…these spaces are important…but type everything else.
6) Press “return” It should say something like “removed orphaned unlinked files” or something
7) Now enter: rm(space)/var/db/.applesetupdone
Press “return”
9) Now enter: reboot
10) Press “return”
11) The machine will now reboot. It will ask you for language selection and go thru the intro video as it did when you first bought your machine.
12) It will ask if you want to transfer data…I did. I didn’t lose anything by doing it and it may be integral to not losing any personal things.
13) Next it will ask for you internet connection stuff….know it or set it up later.
14) Next it will ask you to create a new local account to administer the computer. IMPORTANT: Do NOT name it the same as the previous account! It will overwrite the previous account completely!!!
15) After creating the account you will automatically be logged in as the new admin!
From here you can access the previous account and change the password to one you will hopefully remember!
Now you can delete the newest account and continue with the old account.
Every once and a while it asks me for a “keychain pass” I just click cancel and continue.
I hope this helps!
the process the indian guy said it worked for my both mac books .
but my next problem is how to install safari back on the system bcoz i see it has be uninstalled from my mav=chine and iam unable to use my computer with the internet as there are no browsers. there is no safari and not even firefox.
plzzzzzzzzzzzz
some one help me in these issue
thanks
Well I was trieng to changE my password, and it said file or directory not found ( at third part.) the os is 10.4.11 or 10.1.14 I don’t remember, as I do not have it with me, could this be because it’s linked to a big chain of computers? If you log into the same user on diff CPUs you van see file changes happen (when you change a file)
Thank you both Dave and Akash!!!! this worked a treat… while not how I expected!
I purchased a second hand iBook G4 a few months ago and was unable [not knowing the Admin password] to delete certain programs or alter the TIME!!!
I tried Daves way and it all looked good… but didnt change anything for me…
then I tried what Akash posted… (below) and it rebooted prompting me to create a whole new administrator profile (while leaving all of my information on my other ‘user’ profile) which allowed me to modify everything I hadnt been able to previously by using the new username and password!
so again THANK YOU both!
this is what worked for me:
—-
restart your computer, hold down Command-S and type in the following:
/sbin/fsck -y [Enter]
/sbin/mount -uaw [Enter]
rm /var/db/.applesetupdone [Enter]
reboot [Enter]

This is a slightly different question. I have a work macbook pro that I want to be able to take overseas but it has a number of limitations locked by a Admin password. It is quite easy to change the hard drive in the new macbook pro but is the admin username and password on the existing drive or locked away in some part of the computer? It would be great if I could swap drives, install the OS and necessary software but would it still ask for the existing password. I’m not in a position to change the administration password.
